No one breaks down the facts better on this topic than our friend Lauren from The Loyal Biscuit Co. in Rockland, Maine! Having said that I am going to post her incredibly informative and funny post regarding Science Diet.
Ingredients: Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Soybean Mill Run, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Calcium Sulfate, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Taurine, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols & Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.
As usual, we’ll break this down by focusing on the top 5 ingredients.
1. Brewer’s Rice is the small milled fragments of rice kernels that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice. Brewers rice is a processed rice product that is missing many of the nutrients contained in whole ground rice and brown rice thus reducing the quality. While this really is not the worst ingredient in the list, it is the FIRST ingredient in the list, which makes it pretty pathetic. You would be paying a fortune for leftover RICE PARTS! WHY??????
2. Ground Whole Grain Corn is a known allergen for dogs and is impossible for them to digest. They get nothing from corn…it is FILLER! And your VET is suggesting this to you? Pitiful.
3. Chicken By-Product Meal is one of only three meat sources in the food and it isn’t even meat. It is chicken beaks and feet and feathers.
4. Powdered Cellulose is purified, mechanically disintegrated cellulose prepared by processing alpha cellulose obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant materials. In other words, Sawdust*
5. Pork Fat is a really cheap, crappy way to get a dog to eat the expensive, crappy T/D. Dogs don’t eat sawdust without some kind of motivation.
So, if the bulk of a dog food lies in the first five ingredients, how does this food help your dogs teeth?
Let’s be naive and say that it does clean their teeth and make them sparkly. That’s what your vet would love to prove to you. The only way they know is because Hill’s has large scale animal testing facilities. And, yes, they do test on dogs and cats just like you have sitting beside you now.
I don’t CARE if it cleans your dog’s teeth. This is NOT a long term solution for healthy gums. This is a recipe for allergic response and cancer fuel. Plain and simple.
Vets LOVE Hill’s because they get amazing margins on the food and MAJOR kickbacks from Hill’s. Here is an excerpt from a part of the Hill’s website we aren’t supposed to see…
Finally, C.E.T chews are essentially prescription rawhide (which is actually hilarious), another veterinary exclusive (ironic) and we all know rawhide is TERRIBLE FOR YOUR DOG. Old news.
